Sri Lanka Gold Buying Guide & FAQ

In Sri Lanka, a sovereign (locally known as a "Pavan" or "Pawn") is a traditional unit of gold weight derived from British sovereign coins. It is exactly equal to 8 grams. Local jewelers routinely price gold necklaces, rings, and bangles in terms of Pavans (e.g. 1 Pavan, 2 Pavans, etc.).
When buying jewelry, the jeweler adds a crafting cost known as **"making charges"** (or wastage/wastage percentage, locally referred to as *handicraft charges* or *'adum kuli'*). These charges typically add 5% to 25% on top of the base gold weight price depending on the complexity of the craftsmanship. Our interactive calculator lets you factor this in easily.
22K gold indicates 22 parts gold and 2 parts alloy, meaning it is 91.6% pure (hence the hallmark stamp '916'). 24K gold (99.9% pure) is highly soft and delicate, making it impractical for everyday wear. 22K gold balances rich yellow color with robust durability, which is why it is the standard gold standard for bridal and traditional jewelry in Sri Lanka.
Look for the official laser hallmark inscription inside the jewelry (e.g., "916" for 22K, or stamp of recognized assayers). In Sri Lanka, you can also have your gold tested and certified for purity at the **Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Authority** or authorized assaying offices located in Sea Street, Colombo.
